It’s the 15th Anniversary of DCALS!Please join us September 14 for our annual Inauguration of Officers Gala Dinner. Matt Kirks will pass the honored gavel to 2017 president John Long. Spouses and guests are welcome and urged to attend. Our main presentation will interest everyone . . .

“The Unwanted Gift” – Virginia’s Portion of Original DC— How many talks have you ever been to about Virginia’s portion of early DC? Probably none. It’s the least-studied part of DC history. Many people today don’t even realize that Arlington County was once in DC - but it was - and all of Ellicott’s and Banneker’s old 1791 stones still mark its lines. This expert presentation focuses on the reasons why Jefferson and Washington originally decided to place DC as they did - ‘cocked’ in a diamond, astride two rivers and two states - and why Virginia’s section never really took hold as a functioning seat of national government. After more than half a century, ‘unwanted’ by Congress, it was returned to the Old Dominion. This is a tale rich in the history and lore of Arlington, Alexandria and early DC. Please join us for an informative and enlightening discussion. Everybody is invited.

The ‘dean’ of DC’s architectural historians, Don Alexander Hawkins has devoted his life to the study of early Washington and L’Enfant’s Plan. He holds degrees in urban design and architecture from Catholic U, and has been influential in DC development for years. In the early ‘90s, seeking to understand more about L’Enfant’s layout, Don and talented wife Cindy created a unique, masterful ‘land survey.’ They researched and drew the first actual Topographic Map ever to show Washington City’s original 1700s terrain. A genuine work of art, it answered so many questions it’s in Library of Congress today. Don Hawkins has authored countless articles, curated historical exhibitions, run NPS bookstores, chaired the Committee of 100 for the Federal City, and operated his own architectural firm for decades. A native Washingtonian, he’s also given memorable past talks for DCALS.
