Every land surveyor knows the lore of USC&GS, GLO and USGS - legendary organizations that measured our continent. But once there was another major US Government surveying agency - almost forgotten today - called the United States Engineering Department. Like those others, ‘U.S.E.D.’ operated from coast to coast. (DC’s old Public Buildings & Public Parks - whose ‘PB&PP’ disks survive – was part of it.) Despite little recognition, US Engineering Department handled massive Federal undertakings. In the early 1900s it was U.S.E.D. – not the famous others - who laid out miles of government installations that still exist along the Anacostia River . . . DC Village, Blue Plains, NRL, Bolling Field, Naval Air Station, Anacostia Park and more. They established high-order, large-area control for many regions across the country. Their original Washington triangulation is shown on maps at DC Surveyors Office. And NGS lists the points. But can those old monuments possibly still be there? Yes - and they check! In an amazing 3-year project for the US Government – spanning the entire realm of surveying from shovels to satellites – our guest speaker solved them. Please join us Wednesday March 7.
This talk presents surveying science at its highest level. Everyone will find it enlightening. DCALS will award Certificates for 1 CPC - equivalent to 1 PDH or 1 CE-Unit Credit Hour.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER :
Licensed in three states, professional land surveyor JOE ALLEGRA of Thrasher Group is a geo-spatial expert and long-time DCALS member. He’s been surveying in DC for 30 years. Between 2013 and 2016 he prepared a full boundary retracement of all Anacostia River facilities from Blue Plains to Frederick Douglass Bridge, integrating data and control from USED, DCSO, DC-OCTO, NGS and others. The project demanded extensive research, recovery of lost monuments, GNSS observations, field triangulation, azimuth sights to Masonic Temple in Alexandria, Lee’s Arlington Mansion and Washington Monument – but the key was U.S.E.D.
